Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and Silver Fluoride (SF) are FDA-approved topically applied solutions that can often rapidly harden tooth decay in primary teeth while also reducing tooth sensitivity. SDF/SF is composed of two main ingredients: silver and fluoride. Silver Fluoride's ingredients have been shown in multiple scientific studies to harden areas of decay which can slow down any future cavity progression. My own clinical observation of SDF/SF has been that it is most effective when combined with increased knowledge of what is driving cavity formation and increased home hygiene routines. SDF treatment has limitations and is not for advanced decaying primary teeth.
SDF is often a simple and noninvasive way to treat primary tooth cavities, and it can be done from the comfort of our dental office. It is often a great first line treatment in combination with frequent monitoring. A consultation with DrJ can assess if your child can benefit from SDF/SF treatment.
